Bishop David Zubik Eases Limits on Attendance for Masses in the Diocese of Pittsburgh
50% Maximum Capacity Now Allowed, Health and Safety Protocols Remain in Effect
Parishes in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh will be allowed to increase attendance at Masses to 50% maximum capacity at each Mass effective this weekend, October 3-4, 2020. However, as with previous directives, it will be up to individual pastors to determine their own safe reopening plans based on their particular spaces, resources, and staffing. All health and safety protocols, including mask-wearing, social distancing of at least 6 feet, and cleaning and sanitizing procedures must still be followed.
In addition, priests are encouraged to make arrangements to distribute the Body of Christ within the Mass (as opposed to the end of Mass). At St. Joan of Arc and St. Louise de Marillac, we will return to doing that this weekend. We will still follow the same procedures for coming forward to receive as we have throughout the pandemic, but now people would return to their seats following reception and the Mass will conclude with the post-Communion prayer, final blessing, dismissal, and closing hymn.
One of the reasons for distributing Communion at the END of Mass was to allow for a smoother, less-crowded, staggered exiting from the church building. In returning the distribution of Communion to its traditional place, everyone will be dismissed at one time. PLEASE BE PATIENT AND CAREFUL as you exit the Church. PLEASE stagger yourselves upon exiting and/or make use of the several exit routes for each church, so that safe distancing can be maintained.
